We transform steel wire into high quality products and accessories

Why you need electrolytic polishing

What is electrolytic polishing? This is a process that involves the removal of materials from a metallic work piece. It is used to deburr, passivate and polish metal surfaces. This process is also refereed to as electropolishing or electrochemical polishing.

The mechanism of electropolishing

The process starts when the metal to be polished is immersed in a temperature controlled basin of electrolyte. This metal is connected to the positive terminal of the DC power supply to serve as the anode while the negative side is connected to the cathode. The current passes from the anode, oxidizing the metal. The oxidized metal is dissolved in the electrolyte. At the cathode, a reduction reaction occurs. This reaction produces hydrogen. The electrolytes used in electrochemical polishing are concentrated acids such as sulfuric and phosphoric acids. To achieve electropolishing in rough surfaces, the protruding parts of the surface must dissolve faster than the recesses.

Application of electrolytic polishing

Electropolishing in many industries especially metal finishing industries. This process can also be applied to objects of complex shapes. Examples of polished surfaces include stainless steel surgical devices and stainless steel drums of washing machines. The process is also applied to the preparation of thin metal samples used in transmission of electron microscopy. This is because, electropolishing does not deform surface layers observed when mechanical polishing is used. Electropolishing is also applied in Ultra High Vacuum components. These components are normally electropolished to have a smoother surface for improved out-gassing rates, vacuum pressures and pumping speed.

WE CAN SATISFY ALL YOUR NEEDS

We produce a wide range of items made of steel wire. Our products have no sharp edges to guarantee maximum safety, according to the UNI CEI EN ISO 13488 standards. Our products undergo pickling treatments to eliminate any debris from the refinishing processes, as well as other finishing treatments like electrolytic polishing and Rilsan or polyethylene coating.

Toffoli SpA is a certified company. As a matter of fact, we are UNI EN ISO 9001:2008 and UNI EN ISO 14001:2008 certified, and our materials are certified as well.
