Understanding fluidized bed-plastic coating

The process of coating. Fluidized bed is an amazing thing to see. At the start of the process, air is normally blown into the bottom of the tank. Once the air gets into the tank, the bed rises and looks like it’s boiling at the surface. The next step involves pre-heating the part to be coated in an oven. The heated part is then dipped into the fluidized bed. The plastic powder particles melt when they come to contact with the heated parts. This allows the coating to quickly and uniformly build up. After the heated part is withdrawn, there may be enough heat left to completely melt surface smooth. If the heat is enough, then the coating is done. All that you need to do is to cool and inspect the pack.

Characteristics of fluid bed coatings

Fluidized bed-plastic coatings usually have a thickness of between .007" - .020’’. Some manufacturers however, have been able to achieve a thickness of 0.70’’ under controlled conditions. To achieve thicker coatings, you need to use plastisol coating or multiple dips. Trimming and masking is used when the manufacturer wants to do partial fluidized bed-plastic coating. Fluidized coatings have the advantage of being remarkably uniform in thickness. They are also available in different colors.

Application of fluidized bed-plastic coating

Fluid bed coatings can be applied in a number of industries. Metal, glass and ceramics are some of the industries where these coatings are used. Parts can be coated using epoxy, polythene, nylon or vinyl. All these materials produce fantastic results.
