All you need to know about stainless steel electropolishing

Most stainless steel forms can be successfully electropolished. Electropolishing can be applied to both in wrought and cast steel types. The process takes between 10-20 minutes and uses relatively low voltages of between 12 and 18 volts. The electrolytes used are usually a mixture of sulphuric and phosphoric acid. Electropolishing process induces preferential dissolution of high spots on the surfaces of steel. This results to smooth surfaces and removes surface stress left after mechanical surface pre-treatments. The debris left after mechanical treatments are removed during electropolishing. However, scratches and visible surface irregularities are unlikely to be removed.

Benefits of electropolished surfaces

Stainless steel electropolishing improves surface reflectivity. This means that electropolished surfaces can be used in industries that need shining metal. The electropolished steel can be used in food industry because they can be easily cleaned. This improves quality of the foods because bacterial infections are greatly reduced. Electropolishing removes machining burrs on small components without running the risk of entrapped surface contamination from earlier mechanical polishing. This process can also be used where mechanical polishing is impossible. For example in polishing complex shapes like wire radiator grilles.
